Condition Assessment and Asset Performance Guidelines

IPWEA NAMS.AU has recognised the need for industry Guidelines for Condition Assessment and Asset Performance. A series of Practice Notes eBooks is being researched and published to assist asset management practitioners in the important task of how best to carry out condition assessments for various classes of assets.

The aim is to foster a national approach and encourage consistency of data and outputs. These documents will be subject to review and update as further and better information comes to hand.

Practice Notes are being developed to provide guidance to practitioners in the field for carrying out condition assessment inspections on a range of physical infrastructure asset types including:

  • Footpaths (published Nov 2007)
  • Kerb and Channel/Gutter (published June 2008)
  • Buildings*
  • Storm Water Infrastructure*
  • Water and Sewerage Infrastructure*

Preamble Document

A Preamble Document (eBook) sets out the generic principles applicable to all types of assets. It covers the basic concepts of condition assessment, performance measurement, risk management and data management.

This overview draws from the excellent work in the International Infrastructure Management Manual (IIMM).

Practice Note 1: Footpaths & Cycleways

The first of the Practice Note eBooks produced is for Footpaths and Cycleways recognising their propensity to feature in damages claims against Councils. Practice Note 2: Kerb & Channel / Gutter

The second of the Practice Note eBooks produced is for Kerb & Channel / Gutter.

These Practice Notes have drawn on examples of best practice from around Australia. They provide practitioners with tools to assist in carrying out inspections that can lead to action plans for remedial works based on risk management principles. They also provide an assessment of overall network condition for longer term planning.
